ALLEGRA PROJECTS is pleased to present Rebecca Ackroyd's new series 'Time piece'.

'Time piece' looks to engage with the idea of how we assess and perceive time. From a scientific point of view, time is a standardised quantification of our very existence. A more metaphysical approach delves into its intricacies and complexities. There is nothing standard about time. It pushes and pulls, expands and contracts. Time is ever changing, as is our feeling within each moment of time itself. In a contemporary context, time is ever more precious and fragile, like the very petals portrayed in Ackroyd’s work.

'Time piece' as a title also refers to the description retailers and jewellers use for high end luxury watches, subconsciously giving the impression that purchasing such an item is buying a piece of time, a privileged perspective on time itself, or a moment we can hold onto.

Time allows for regeneration, growth and a future, all personified in the central part of Ackroyd’s work; the sprouts of a small plant, of a new life.

Ultimately, Ackroyd pushes to disintegrate this superficial notion of ‘time’, showing how it is purely an act of perception. Something that can be observed and manipulated.
