Emalin is pleased to present textile embroideries on vintage fabrics by Evgeny Antufiev (b. 1986 in Kyzyl, Russia).
Evgeny Antufiev was born in the Republic of Tuva, a federal subject of Russia in southern Siberia. To this day, the remote region maintains active practices of alchemy, oral folklore and shamanism, which serves as a point of departure for the artist’s sculptural engagement with real but mythical space. Processes of zealous collecting define both the logic by which Antufiev structures content and his methodology of display. The resultant installations present an enmeshment of references, allowing multiple levels of associations to coexist while resisting chronological linearity and interpretation. At stake in the artist’s practice is the belief that the cultivation of mythological consciousness can achieve a reconnection with different worldviews and allow the renegotiation of ourselves and our relationship to the world we inhabit.
This series of textiles draws on traditional floral ornament evoking the patterns of folk embroidery from the northern regions of Russia. They were first exhibited in the context of Antufiev's solo exhibition Immortality Forever at the Moscow Museum of Modern Art in 2015.
