ALLEGRA PROJECTS is pleased to present this new body of work by Rebecca Ackroyd.
A new interpretation of a recurring shell motive in Ackroyd’s practise, ‘Considerate home’ combines a hand with a shell and a pill. Ackroyd uses the shell as a means of shelter, the idea of home, yet engaging with the semiotic connotations of a shell resembling feminine armour.
Ackroyd uses the pill to poke at its ability to also act as a form of shelter or armour, one to protect ourselves from thoughts, feeling and emotions. Simultaneously, the shell pulls us to relaxed summer afternoons by the beach, the idea of escape, and the pills ability to take us there.
Ackroyd’s ongoing interest in Freudian psychology and its relevance in contemporary society is exemplified through this ritual of taking a pill to make one feel better, to diverge and avoid the unbearable, barbaric and uncontrollable tendencies of the mind.
